Narcís Oller ( 1846-1930 ) va donar unes quantes obres mestres a la literatura catalana, després de segles que no passava. La Papallona ( 1882 ) va ser un èxit internacional, i amb L'Escanyapobres ( 1884 ) va reixir a treure's de sobre el llast del romanticisme. A La febre d'or ( 1890-2 ) va descriure la burgesia barcelonina, a La bogeria ( 1898 ) va tocar el tema naturalista del determinisme hereditari i a Pilar Prim ( 1906 ) fa un pas cap a la novel·la psicològica. Oller també va escriure diversos reculls de contes i unes Memòries literàries ( 1962, pòstumes ).
